Tesla is ending its plans to sell the Cybertruck in Australia and New Zealand. People who placed a deposit starting in late 2019 are receiving emails stating their reservations are cancelled. The company will refund the deposits within 30 days. This ends a wait that has lasted almost seven years for customers in these regions.
The notification from the company states that producing the Cybertruck for these markets has been discontinued. As a result, Tesla cannot fulfill the reservations. To encourage customers to consider other vehicles, the company is offering a free one-year subscription to its supervised self-driving feature. This offer applies to those who order a new Model 3 or Model Y instead.
Australia was once a significant market for the vehicle. A survey from 2020 indicated that reservations from the country ranked third globally, behind the United States and Canada. Tesla had previously stopped taking new reservations for the truck in Australia in May 2022. However, it did not notify existing reservation holders or issue refunds at that time, leaving them to continue waiting.
The primary obstacle for these markets has been vehicle design. The Cybertruck is manufactured exclusively with the steering wheel on the left side. Australia and New Zealand require vehicles with the steering wheel on the right. Adapting the truck for these markets, along with meeting local certification standards, would involve a significant investment.
Current sales figures for the Cybertruck are low. In the third quarter of 2026, Tesla reported delivering 8,295 units in a category that includes the Cybertruck. This volume is far below the production capacity of the factory. The company's other international launches have been in countries that use left-hand drive vehicles.
The company's guidance to shareholders in 2024 suggested that certification for other markets might occur the following year. That timeline passed without any new markets being added. For individuals in Australia and New Zealand who placed deposits years ago, the wait for the vehicle is now over.
